You can see it.

The light is changing.

Almost daily, the hard, short winter light is changing. Subtly.

This gets me thinking. About light and about The Light….

The photographer part of me analyzes the light around me constantly. I do it automatically. And I can tell you with all certainty, as we slip into February, that the light is changing.

Stronger for longer.

It’s a light that carries hope. Spring will advance. Winter will retreat.

This winter will retreat. Your winter will retreat.

It’s a light full of that exact promise. Think about the significance.

It’s nature’s whispered declaration from the Creator that says, “I am doing a new thing. Be aware.”

We love that whisper. But we have to be listening for it. Looking for the changing light.

It’s hard to do when we’re caught up in the middle of the winter storms.

We’re in the middle of our winter. Seasonally.

And often spiritually.

Which is nothing to be ashamed of, do we realize that? Do we ever act ashamed of winter? Make lame excuses for why it’s cold? Try to cover up and pretend there’s no snow? Do we let winter embarrass us?

No. We buy salt for our driveways, warm coats and boots to go about our days in, and we brag about how high the snow drifts were up against the house.

Don’t be ashamed that you’ve experienced a winter. A heart squall. Everyone experiences it at some point. It won’t last forever. Every winter has a purpose. We rest, we shed the weaker parts of ourselves, we prepare for the next cycle, stronger, older, more anchored.

But now the promised Light is growing, advancing, nearing, working!

Spring approaches in the distance, promises of new growth, awakenings, birth. The Light, the Son of God,  brings all of that.

Someone out there needs to know that today. Winter is on its way out. God desires to break new ground, bring fresh healing, and reveal Himself to us anew.

The Light is busy working, advancing, taking us out of winter. In ways the human heart can’t fully see just yet.

That’s exciting. Why cling to winter? Why stay there?

Time to let the light come flooding in.

This is where faith and hope come in. That’s where we make a place for His promises, for His faithfulness. Where we step out of the shadows and into His light.

Where we trust when He says He’s at work. When everything will soon reflect the Light of the world, the way He intended.

2 Corinthians 4:6

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

Spring is coming. To our hearts. To our struggles.

I think suddenly to the stories of Narnia, and how the snow and cold retreated with the advancement of every breath and step of the Great Lion, Aslan… his presence bringing a glorious thaw to the land.

What a powerful picture of God’s might over our soul winters that C.S.Lewis then extends to us with one very notable description;

“When Aslan bares his teeth, winter meets its death. When he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”

I know you’ve been hungry for a glorious thaw.

It’s coming. It’s already on the way.

Hang on, the Light of the World, He’s bringing something new.

With every step closer, He is bringing spring. Bringing life.

This winter you’ve been in won’t stand a chance.
